Dana Duplan, a 23-year resident of Ramona, began his musical journey at age 5, and the flame still burns strong to this day!! With a primary interest in American Roots music, he digs deep into the variations on the theme. Dana appreciates the rural lifestyle, its animals, and like-minded humans too!
The idea for “Evacuatin’ Chickens” is based on an actual event—a brush fire at the local chicken ranch near our home. I was setting up for a show, and my wife sent me a message stating: “There’s a fire at the egg ranch and they’re evacuating chickens.” I immediately drew that picture in my head and knew that it was the genesis of a Dana Duplan song! I combined some prior experiences of having to evacuate with our family members, both two and four-legged varieties, during the Cedar and Witch Creek fires. And we all know that Ramona has a long history of poultry production! Furthermore, I always wanted to use “Cucamonga” in a song, as it was a funny word to me as a child. It has nothing to do with the song, but I jammed it in anyways! I envisioned the feel of this song as sort of a Ragtime Blues fingerpicking style, popular in the 1930s, and the music came to me as I was constructing the lyrics. So, “Evacuatin’ Chickens” is based on several true stories, and a whole bunch of made up stuff--I hope you enjoy!!
